What is a website contract, and in what situation do you need one?

A website contract, also known as a website development contract, is a formal agreement between you and your client outlining the terms and conditions of your web services. Such services include things like designing web pages, turning designs into a functional website, offering web hosting, and website maintenance.
Agreements play an integral role in the client intake process. In many instances, a client is not really a client until they are prepared to sign your contract and agree to your proposed terms.
Once all parties have signed off, then everyone is held accountable to what they agreed on, making the whole process more transparent and professional from the outset.
It should also be noted that once all parties sign a contract, it becomes a legally binding document.

The problem with most website contract templates

While web design and development has become increasingly popular, it’s still a foreign concept for many clients.
Generally speaking, people don’t have the time or energy to learn about HTML, javascript, CSS, PSD files, hosting, domains, plugins, and other jargon used in the web industry.
At the end of the day, clients just want a fully functioning website that’s going to help them to achieve their goals.
But then agencies create long-winded website design agreements that intimidate clients with pages upon pages of fine print.
Sometimes long contracts are too overwhelming for clients forcing them to sign without reading, which can lead to conflicts later on in your relationship. Or sometimes, clients will not proceed with the project altogether, which obviously isn’t ideal.
In a highly technical field, it’s essential to create a simple website contract template that’s easy for potential clients to understand and to feel confident in the partnership.

How to secure your next client using our simple website contract template

Whether you’re a large web design agency or a one-person freelancer, you need a system to turn new leads into loyal clients, and a contract is a vital tool in this process.
To understand how you can leverage our super simple website contract template, let’s break down what your new client communication touchpoints look like.
So a client discovers your services then reaches out to you to inquire about their project.
From there, you book a consultation to understand the specifics of the work they want to complete for their website.
You go away and put together a proposal based on the information they provided. The proposal outlines your approach to the job, evidence of doing similar jobs in the past, and other marketing materials to show the client you’re the best person for the project.
It’s at this point your potential client is excited about the idea of working with you, but for whatever reason, they’re not ready to proceed.

Why?

Maybe they’re interviewing other web development agencies, or they’re not entirely convinced of the return on investment of your services. Or merely they’re not mentally ready for such an undertaking.
Whatever the case may be, it’s at this moment you can send them your simple contract and ask them if they’re happy with the terms.
This gesture can uncover any objections your prospective client has about working with you, which on the surface may sound confronting. But it’s actually a good thing.
By creating a dialogue based on your contract, you start to understand why the client is yet to hire you. And with that awareness, you can negotiate the terms of your agreement until all parties are comfortable to proceed.
So, in summary, your website contract can be used as a powerful sales tool to uncover client objections.
